2022 Recap from SFBATCO
Dear SFBATCO Friends and Supporters,
Wow, y’all - is it really already the end of 2022?! As it was for many people and organizations, 2022 was a year of change and growth for SFBATCO. As we emerged from the depths of the ongoing pandemic, we were forced to take a step back and look at where we’d come from, where we are now, and where we wanted to go. In July, the staff and board put our heads together to create the following vision statement:
SFBATCO envisions a San Francisco Bay Area where the participation in live theatre is essential, accessible, and exhilarating; where artists are valued for their creativity as well as their role in sparking societal change; and where a multitude of cultural experiences are equitably represented.
Now for the fun part - figuring out how we make this vision a reality. We determined that we needed to invest not only in our professional full productions, but also in the development of new works and the community of artists who make the Bay Area the dynamic cultural hub that it is.
Our professional programming included a three week run of I, Too, Sing America and the second annual New Roots Theatre Festival. Between these two events, we brought over 5,000 audience members to our home at Brava Theater Center while engaging over 120 theatre workers. We provided free tickets to more than 700 SFUSD students and boasted an average ticket price of $18 to our paying patrons.
Additionally, SFBATCO helmed two new programs specifically designed to strengthen the performing arts workforce. Our 6-week Audition Workshop curated with African-American Shakespeare Company provided free training to fifteen participants, while our Creators Lab provided stipends and a collaborative incubation space to 8 local playwrights to turn their ideas into live performances. We also produced our first-ever Original Cast Recorded album in a 10-song I, Too, Sing America EP!
2023 at SFBATCO brings another year of exciting productions, valuable workshops and labs, our electric festival, dynamic youth programs, and more!
We hope you will consider SFBATCO in your end-of-year giving. By investing in SFBATCO, you are investing in the Bay Area’s artistic landscape and ensuring that important stories are told, heard, seen, and experienced. There is no donation too small–every dollar counts. And if you are unable to make your entire contribution now, consider signing up for smaller, monthly donations. From all of us at SFBATCO, we wish you a joyful holiday season and a healthy 2023!
