OUR mission
SFBATCO engages artists and audiences through live theatre productions, creative development, and community service initiatives that resonate with SF Bay Area perspectives. The organization provides a platform for People of the Global Majority, and inspires both new audiences and theatre innovators.
Our vision
SFBATCO envisions a San Francisco Bay Area where the participation in live theatre is essential, accessible, and exhilarating; where artists are valued for their creativity as well as their role in sparking societal change; and where a multitude of cultural experiences are equitably represented.
Our story
“We will create great art and give back to our community and tell our stories using a multiplicity of minds, bodies, and voices.”
- MARCELO JAVIER & RODNEY EARL JACKSON JR., FOUNDERS
In the summer of 2012, we were sitting in a bar in the lower east side of Manhattan wondering “how did we get so far from home?!” but more importantly “how do we get back to San Francisco?!”. In true artistic fashion we grabbed the first thing we could write on to put our ideas down into something tangible.
And like that SFBATCO was formed, even if we didn’t exactly have the name yet.
We are not the first people in the San Francisco Bay Area to want a thriving theater scene to exist and hopefully we won’t be the last. In fact, we know that there is an entire community in San Francisco that wants to see the once flourishing Market Street come back to life with lit up marquees, refurbished trolleys, and the unmistakable sound of young talent pouring out of stage doors.
Our theatre company delivers a creatively charged youthful energy that encompasses all that makes San Francisco great. We are a theatrical generation to be reckoned with. We will not accept "a lack of resource. We will create great art and give back to our community and tell our stories using a multiplicity of minds, bodies, and voices.
