Fall Semester:
September 12 - November 20, 2022
*Fall classes will take place at JLM

Meeting twice a week, students will participate in a theater creative writing workshop where they will invent characters and produce dialogue centered around a given theme. Students will work together as an ensemble exploring the different elements of playwriting such as character development, dialogue, movement, and so much more. The fall semester will culminate in a staged reading of the students’ works in progress at Brava Theater on November 17. The classes will be led by playwright and actor, Sedrick Cabrera.

Spring Semester:
January 9 - April 30, 2023
*Spring classes will be back at Brava

Students will collaborate with a director and music director to create and perform an original stage production based on selections from the fall semester’s creative writing workshops. The final project will be performed over one weekend at Brava Theater in April 2023. Spring Classes and rehearsals will be held at Brava Theater and James Lick Middle School under the direction of Keith Carames.

Playwriting & Performance Workshop:

In this course, with the assistance and mentorship of working artists, students will collaborate for approximately 10 weeks to create a series of original dramatic stories to be acted out by both students and professional actors. Students will discuss current events connected to Covid and politics and will employ writing and acting strategies to create these dramatic texts - some of which will have the potential to be coupled with song. The final pieces will be performed and filmed during the Spring 2022 semester.

YTTL classes are open to students ages 12-17 and are free of charge.
