“I, Too, Sing America” was conceived by composer Othello Jefferson as a love letter to his daughters; a work that reflected them on the stage. The show aims to represent a fuller picture of people of color in theater by telling stories that don’t solely focus on oppression and pain but also include ambition, competition, triumph, tradition, joy, and reflection. With a diverse cast of singers, actors, poets, and performers, “I, Too, Sing America” honors and weaves the perspectives and experiences of American artists of color with poetry, song, music and movement, featuring original compositions by Othello Jefferson.
The performances of “I, Too, Sing America” are January 28 to February 13 - Thu 8PM, Fri 8PM, Sat 2PM, Sat 8PM, Sun 8PM. With a company of twenty-five dancers and singers, “I, Too, Sing America” highlights poetic works by artists including “We Real Cool” by Gwendolyn Brooks, “Accents” by Denise Froham, “Once Barbie Chang Worked” by Victoria Chang, “I, Too” by Langston Hughes, and more. The performances are under the musical direction Othello Jefferson with direction by Jamie Yuen-Shore and choreographic direction by Christine Chung.
