We stand by Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

As attacks on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) escalate—including recently revised guidelines for funding from the National Endowment of Arts, which prohibit grantees from having DEI programs—we at SFBATCO remain strong, loud, and unwavering in our commitment to BIPOC artists and the transformative power of storytelling. These political shifts don’t just threaten policy, they threaten our ability to create, connect, and exercise empathy.

In the face of these challenges, the SFBATCO staff and Board of Directors would like to take this moment to fearlessly recommit to our mission and vision:

OUR MISSION
SFBATCO engages artists and audiences through live theatre productions, creative development, and community service initiatives that resonate with SF Bay Area perspectives. The organization provides a platform for People of the Global Majority, and inspires both new audiences and theatre innovators.

OUR VISION
SFBATCO envisions a San Francisco Bay Area where the participation in live theatre is essential, accessible, and exhilarating; where artists are valued for their creativity as well as their role in sparking societal change; and where a multitude of cultural experiences are equitably represented.

It seems timely that this week we open our latest world premiere production, Cuckoo Edible Magic. A powerful new work by Reed Flores, Cuckoo tells the story of two ordinary people who are called upon to become heroes. Through themes of community, family, and self-discovery, it reminds us that we are stronger than we think we are. It challenges us to recognize our own superpowers—the capacity for love, resilience, and action.

This is the time when we must use our collective “superpowers” to serve and heal the world around us.

Art is an act of resistance. Community is our real power! Now more than ever, we must show up, stand firm, and fight for the future we believe in. Join us.

In community,

Rodney Earl Jackson, Jr.
Artistic Director
